In February 2019 Noireco received a license to use the PEFC logo. The logo is proof of sustainable forest management. It indicates that the wood, used in Noireco’s biochar production is ecologically and ethically sustainable.

What is a PEFC logo?

PEFC is an international, non-governmental, non-profit organization, a certification system that is promoting sustainable forest management. Literally, PEFC means “Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification”. In Finland, the PEFC logo can be granted by Suomen Metsäsertifiointi ry (Finnish Forest Certification Council).

The certification covers the whole supply chain of the material. PEFC has a chain of custody that tracks the material from the forest into a final product, such as biochar.

Ecological and ethical sustainability are the requirements for the PEFC certification. Ecological sustainability covers the supporting of the natural forest ecosystems, considering the endangered species, soil, water etc. Forests should not be regarded only as endless sources of renewable raw materials and energy, it is highly important to decrease the impact of human actions in them in every possible way during the utilization.

Considering the social sustainability means for example, that the working conditions in the woods and the whole supply chain are fair, safe and profitable for all the parties. Read more about PEFC certification on their international site or on the Finnish Forest Certification Council’s site.

Noireco has earned its PEFC logo

Noireco uses certified raw material in the production of biochar. When you buy our product, you can be sure that there is no exploitation behind it. No rainforest has been turned into a plantation to produce the wood for our biochar, no toxic chemicals used or genes manipulated.

We would like to remind you, that also our production and the right usage of our products lie on a sustainable base! Our new production plant in Hirvensalmi, Finland produces biochar in thermal processes from pulpwood and industrial side streams. By using biochar in landscaping, soil improvement or in your barbecue, you can support the CO2-neutrality and help to prevent the global climate change.

And, when choosing any wood-based product, always make sure it has a PEFC logo on it!
